Korkyt - historical personality, poet and composer, lived in the Ninth Century in the Syr-Daria steppes. The creator of kobyz, narrator, patron of poets, musicians, baksy. According to the legends, Korkyt made the kobyz after slaughtering a camel. «Kitabi   dede   Korkyt»   («The   Book   of   My Grandfather Korkyt») is the written              epic monument of the Turkic peoples. Every legend has its own plot and Korkyt-ata is the main hero of every story - sage, tribal chief, fortune-teller. According to the legend, at the request of Korkyt, the kobyz was put on his grave, and sounded gently every time when the wind rushed. An architectural monument in the honour of Korkyt-ata was raised in 1980 in Kyzyl-Orda Region. The legend about Korkyt, related by the eminent Kazakh writer-academician Mukhtar Auezov, is very optimistic. The essence of this is that Korkyt found immortality in serving the mankind through art.
