Legend of the Dombra Exhausted from fighting his enemies and with a long journey ahead, the batyr on his way to the aul decided to take a rest. Sitting down in the shade of the bluff, he cut out a piece of wood, stretched upon it horse hair and tried to extract some sounds. But the instrument was silent. Placing it at his side, the batyr fell asleep. He was woken by sounds coming from the instrument. Taking it into his hands the batyr was surprised to notice near the head of the neck a small wooden chip that somebody had put under the strings, and he decided that it was a joke of the Evil One. Likely from this that time the people call this upper chip «shaitan tiek». The use of horse hair and the absence of the upper chip were characteristic of ancient instruments.
